Perfect Beach Day

I don't know what made me think that today would be a great day to go take pictures on the beach, but that is exactly where I went. What an amazing time I had. The sand was covered in snow, as was everything else. It was quite treacherous getting down to the beach on the slippery steps! The sky was blue and clear; the sand was an in contrast to the white powder of the snow. Seagulls and other locals were enjoying the cool breeze on their walks by the water.

Jersey Made

Everything I make is Jersey Made; and everything in this store is Jersey Made too!

Jersey Made, located in Mount Holly, NJ was a fantastic find for me. At an art show in Keansburg, NJ, Jeweler Dori of Face of Contentment told me about Holly and her great little shop. Holly is an artist herself and created a place that supports her fellow local artists and brings creativity to the masses with classes in a variety of crafts.

This is the best part: Jersey Made will be selling Tracey Knits! Now you can go in and see my handmade knit items live and in person anytime. You can, as always, buy my work online if you choose, but I know there are people who prefer brick and mortor so here it is! Be sure to stop in and check it out.

Handmade Shop of the Week: The Tote Trove

Tracy Esposito, of The Tote Trove, has been selling her bags, purses and jewelry on Etsy since January of 2009. Her work is colorful and fun, and every item is one of a kind!

Why did you decide to open your handmade shop?
I'd been making jewelry and painting totes for about six months when a Michaels cashier who knew me as a regular suggested I sell what I was making on Etsy. I'd never heard of the site and was immediately impressed when I logged on. It took me a few more months before I took the plunge and opened my shop. But truth be told, I knew I wanted to be on the Web even before learning about Etsy. Creating art is a little bit like writing; you can keep it to yourself for only so long before you feel compelled to unleash it.

Has your inventory changed much since you first opened?
Absolutely! In the beginning, I listed only small and medium totes featuring scenic designs. Then I moved on to bolder designs and decided to list all my jewelry while I was at it. Before I knew it, I was adding large totes and tiny totes featuring every design imaginable and crafting new, envelope-pushing jewelry. Next I'd like to make a line of barrettes and children's jewelry (so many people assume the jewelry I make now is for children! I might as well give them what they want.) I also plan to paint regular paintings and possibly offer frameable prints of my tote desigs.

Who are the majority of your customers? How did they find you?
I meet most of my customers at craft fairs. Although I do occassionally sell items on Etsy, it happens much less frequently. I think the Etsy customers just stumble upon me when I list stuff; I have yet to have someone approach me via a referral from someone else or something they read on a blog.

What inspires you to create?
Everything! I get so many ideas that I absolutely must jot them all down. And forget about walking around Michaels or A. C. Moore; I always leave those stores on idea overload! But that having been said, most of my designs are colorful, bold, fanciful, and funky. So stuff like that inspires me.

What is your favorite item in your shop currently? Your most popular item?
My favorite item is my Large Proud Peacock Tote. I just love that there's this peacock hanging out amidst random stuff like cupcakes, hearts, and orange slices. I don't really know which item is the most popular. My Etsy customers have bought a little bit of everything. At craft fairs, tiny totes and jewelry are usually the top sellers.

What has been your greatest resource to make your shop successful?
I've been social networking a lot lately, which is funny because it's something I thought I'd never do. But I guess the main thing is really my willingness to push myself. I'm constantly asking myself what I can do to make my business better. Sometimes the answer is better pictures or a larger product range or just posting more often. Other times it's finding more niche-marketed craft fairs or focusing on my blog. One thing I've noticed is that even in this age of the Internet, it's far easier to make sales in person. That one kind of surprised me. So I'm trying to make that connection from the craft fair to the Web.

Any changes coming to your shop in the future?
Well, I recently updated the banner and avatar. I hired a graphic artist to incorporate my hand-painted Tote Trove logo into it as well as my business cards, tent banner, etc. She's working on a blog template for me too, which I'm embarrassingly excited about. I think that's probably where I get the most traffic.

New For Spring

I love making my golf club covers and winter hats, I really do, but I have wanted to expand my inventory with ideas that went right along with those 2 items. At craft fairs, people often mistake my golf covers for puppets, so I decided, why not? Here is my first attempt at a new item in my shop, the Sporty Hand Puppet:

He is sized to fit most little hands and has some stretch to fit on a small adult comfortably. His hat is stitched with the Yankees signature logo and this pants are covered in their trademark stripes.

I can make this design for any baseball or football team, amateur or professional. If you are a knitter yourself, I will be offering the pattern for sale on both ravelry and my etsy shop.

I would love to hear what you think... Hit or Miss?

Handmade Shop of the Week: The High Plains Knitter

Dianne Gray, The High Plains Knitter, has been selling hand-knitted and crocheted accessories and gifts in her shop since September of 2008. Her colorful designs will add interest to even the dullest of ensambles.

Why did you decide to open your handmade shop?
Having been diagnosed with primary pulmonary hypertension, my activities were greatly decreased. I hadn't had time to pursue my lifelong love of knitting and crocheting while raising boys, and felt that, besides looking for a way to help pay for expensive medications, then would be a good time to take up my old love and sell it.

Has your inventory changed much since you first opened?
Yes, When I first opened my shop, I had only a few scarves and scarflettes with dark pictures. Since then, I have added crocheted jewelry and flower appliques, knitting patterns, hairpins, headbands, wrist cuffs, and gift certificates. I have also developed a couple of scarf designs that have done fairly well for me.

Who are the majority of your customers? How did they find you?
Lol, well obviously, women, but beyond that most of them are inside the U.S. My very first order came from Canada, and I've had one from the U.K. Almost have of my flower ring orders came from Australia. Yay Aussies! Since they all had Asian names, I kind of think they were friends that decided to have rings together.

What inspires you to create?
So many things. I get inspired by the textures of different yarns and how they might look, work and feel together. The fact that I hate struggling with keeping a scarf in place on a cold day while trying to do other things like carry something or getting in and out of the car, inspired the creation of the auto-lock scarf. I just really wanted a scarf that I could wrap around my neck and forget about it. I thought others might feel the same way, and it appears that they do.

What is your favorite item in your shop currently? Your most popular item?
My favorite item would be my Golden Twilight Scarf of Many Colors. It was originally a custom order from a jewelry maker on Etsy that wanted a scarf that would match some jewelry she had made. She told me what colors and she wanted and requested a couple of types of yarns. I took what she had asked for out my stash, and it was a real winner.

What has been your greatest resource to make your shop successful?
Boy, that's a hard one. I've done so many things, and they've been a steady progression to improve my shop. I hate to say it, but I think Christmas and cold weather have the greatest impact on my sales. I developed my jewelry and light scarves to sell in the spring and summer, but nothing seems to make much difference. Sales dropped off dramatically in the middle of April, and didn't pick up again until November, which is exactly what happened the year before.

Any changes coming to your shop in the future?
I am always looking for new things for my shop. I am thinking that when sales drop again, I will concentrate on my patterns. Maybe other knitters will take a liking to them.

How else can we find you online? Any team affiliations?
I have a shop on 1000 Markets http://www.1000markets.com/users/thehighplainskniiter which has only had one sale, a shops on Artfire and Zibbet that have had none. I've had the Artfire shop for an amazingly low rate since January, but this month I downgraded to a basic account. An amazing rate isn't so amazing if you have no sales. The Zibbet account is basic. 1000 Markets on charges when you sell something. The y teams I am a member of are Etsy Knitters Street Team, Etsy Texas Crafters, and Awe Team.

A Great Deal! The High Plains Knitter is happy to give away a pattern of your choice with any purchase from her shop to anyone that mentions Tracey Knits at time of purchase.

Handmade Shop of the Week: Wellspring Creations

Judy/Wellspring  of  Wellspring Creations, has been selling jewelry on etsy since September of 2008, and other places for more then a year before that. She combines beautiful wire wrapping with oversized jemstones.

Why did you decide to open your handmade shop?
I did way too much "eBay Therapy" when I couldn't find a cancer support group for a family member's rare cancer (now two years cancer-free!). About the time I discovered what a huge stockpile of natural gemstone cabochons and beads I'd collected, a friend introduced me to wirework. It was a natural match!
Has your inventory changed much since you first opened?
I'm still working through my stockpile of gemstones (though I'm still always looking for unusual stones), but my skill and techniques have really developed. Now I am much more creative and inventive, especially with geometric and asymmetric shapes.

Who are the majority of your customers? How did they find you?
I do many markets and fairs. Most of my transactions are in person, simply because my work sells itself. Online, my clients vary. Most find me through web searches, though some of my best clients are Twitter friends.

What inspires you to create?
In my life, I've done just about every kind of needlework imagineable, but I was only able to follow patterns, never able to create...until I found wire. Now any quiet moment, sometimes even in my sleep, I will be designing. I have literally gotten up at 2am with several ideas to sketch that came to me in my sleep!

What is your favorite item in your shop currently? Your most popular item?
I am particularly fond of this sterling silver wrapped teardrop amethyst pendant. I hand picked it at a gem show for its clarity and fascinating internal structure. The wrapping holds it securely, but doesn't cover up the amazing stone. Most of my items are very limited edition or one of a kind, but one popular item is the sterling silver wire wrapped Swarovski crystal ring.

What has been your greatest resource to make your shop successful?
Twitter, because I've cultivated a lot of friends, and from my blog, WellspringCreations.blogspot.com. My greatest strength is that I use the finest materials: sterling silver, solid copper, or 14K gold filled wire and rare, high-quality stones. I combine them with great attention to detail such as careful placement and finishing of wire ends. I even make my own earwires to make sure they meet my high standards for comfort and stability (so they stay in your ears rather than 'work' their way out!)

Any changes coming to your shop in the future?
I seem to be very creative this time of year, so I will be adding new designs as the season progresses. I will know what they are when I hold the stone in my hand and it suggests a wrapping. :-)

How else can we find you online? Any team affiliations?
I have three eCrater shops in addition to my Etsy shop. All can be accessed through http://www.wellspringcreations.us/. In addition, I am a member of the EtsyTwitter Team. You can follow me on Twitter at www.Twitter.com/WSCreations.

A GREAT DEAL!
From now to the end of the month of February, Wellspring Creations is including a gift with each purchase with the code: HEARTS (type it in the checkout process or email immediately afterwards with the code... ship fast :-)

Handmade Shop of the Week: Designs by Denise

Denise McLachlan, of Designs By Denise, has been making jewelry and accessories for her etsy shop since April of 2008, though she has been crafting much, much longer. You can find her selling her work at craft fairs and very often for a good cause.
Why did you decide to open your handmade shop?
I love to make jewelry and started selling it because we had a fundraiser for my nephew. At the fundraiser I had a good feedback from buyers which was encouraging. A few weeks after the fundraiser I was watching Martha Stewart whose guest was an Etsy seller. Right away I went online, checked out Etsy and really liked it, and decided to sell my jewelry on Etsy.

Has your inventory changed much since you first opened?
No, my main items are still the same. I will be adding necklaces to my jewelry line this year.

Who are the majority of your customers? How did they find you?
Most of my customers are women and a few young women. The youngest customer was 7; she insisted that her father buy her a pink bracelet. My customers find me at craft fairs, through word of mouth and online.

What inspires you to create?
I come from a very creative family; we all have crafts that we do like stained glass, paper crafts, painting, guitar making, knitting, crocheting and of course jewelry making.

I’ve been crafting since I was a small child and feel like it’s in my genes. Although my day job pays the bills it has no creativity involved and when I am home I need a creative outlet, so I make jewelry and do other crafts.

The inspiration for my jewelry comes from many different places. If I’m making a piece for a specific person I think about that person and their likes. Sometimes I decide to make a piece of jewelry and I put out the beads and components and they inspire the finished piece. Occasionally I’ll see a piece of jewelry worn by someone or in a magazine and think, “I can make that, only different/better” and use that as the inspiration. There isn’t one place that inspiration comes from.

What is your favorite item in your shop currently? Your most popular item?
My favorite item in my shop is the silver chain maille with clear glass beads. I really enjoy making chain maille, it gets my mind off of everything because it’s such detailed work. The most popular item in my shop is the Delicate Gold Bracelet with green Swarovski crystals. The most popular item at craft shows is the eyeglass/badge holders. I can’t keep them in stock.

What has been your greatest resource to make your shop successful?
My greatest resources are equally the Etsy NJ Team and Soma Artisan's Guild. There is such a vast amount of knowledge in both groups and I have learned so much from being a part of both.

Any changes coming to your shop in the future?
Yes, I am adding a line of bridal headpieces and accessories. I had a business when I lived in St. Louis where I made custom headpieces and accessories. When I moved to Florida it was not a good market for bridal, since the majority of the population is retirees, so I put that aside for a while. I have decided that now that I’m in a younger market again it would be a good time to go back to making bridal accessories.
As mentioned earlier I will be adding necklaces to my shop too.

How else can we find you online? Any team affiliations?
My website is http://www.jewelrybydm.com/ I am a member of the Etsy NJ Team and Soma Artisan's Guild.

Designs by Denise will be doing a giveaway in April on her blog at http://jewelrybydm.blogspot.com/ in celebration of her birthday. If you fell in love with her jewelry, as I did, be sure to stop by there and enter to win.
